It is the goal of your Rotary Board to meet our pledge of $7,000 for every Rotarian every year. Last week, your Rotary Board all contributed $100 and some of the other Rotarians presented at our meeting also followed suit, but we need everybody in order to reach the $7,000. Some of the projects of this program: $100 will give tuition and books for one year of school to two children in Kenya, $500 will give ten months of food for a child in Guatemala, and $1,000 will give clean drinking water for over 300 people in India. The reason for this added request is that in recent years, contributions have not kept pace with the steady growth in requests for matching grants and new humanitarian and educational programs. We are still working on sign-ups to build the playground for our Centennial Project. As of our last Centennial Committee meeting on May 5, we were only at 10% of our goal. I know this has been a very busy Rotary year and with greater than usual requests. The primary reason for this is because this is Rotary's 100-Year Anniversary and our Centennial Project. I would like to thank the Golf Committee for all of their hard work --- Joe Dugan, Bob Moir, Butch Philips, and Ed Andrisek. It was greatly appreciated and I also want to thank our helpers Sharon Pike, Alex Rossi, Barry Shulman, David Wyatt, and Pat Donato. Finally, I want to thank our club members for playing. The results are not final yet, but it was a successful tournament. The days for the construction of the Sunny Fields Playground, our Centennial Project, is fast approaching. The build-out dates are from Wednesday, June 1 to Sunday, June 5. Sign-up sheets have been passed around at our club meetings and are still available if you haven't already signed up to help. The build-out dates are from Tuesday, April 26 to Sunday, May 1. The shifts available to work are 8am-12pm, 12:30pm-4:30pm, and 5:00pm-close. We are looking for "Skilled" workers who are familiar with tools, measuring, and cutting; "Unskilled" workers who can carry, assemble, shovel, etc.; people to help serve food; people to help with childcare; and any other special skills that you may feel are needed. For additional information, you may go online at www.syvplayground.com or contact Tami Jo Dotson at (805) 686-2020 or David Brown at (805) 686-2321. Michele Hinnrichs announced her resignation from the club due to continual business conflicts with our meetings. CA Association of Homes and Services for the Aging Volunteer of the Year In December, 2004, The Solvang Lutheran Home submitted Len Dalberg's name as a candidate for a statewide award through its non-profit association, known as CAHSA, California Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. It was an easy submission to compile, as Len has contributed a wide variety of volunteer services to the Solvang Lutheran Home for over twenty years. Len has been holding weekly current events sessions of "our World Today" for over 16 years, taken elders on trips of out town, shown compassion and support to those in emotional, spiritual, and physical need, amassed miles on his car transporting elders to appointments, and in past years, assisted with the coupon program through El Rancho Market, to name only a few of the contributions he's made to the Solvang Lutheran Home. The Santa Ynez Valley Rotary Club was also mentioned in the application for this prestigious award as Len has received the "Four Avenues of Service Citation" through Rotary International. Len's involvement at the Solvang Lutheran Home and in our community is multi-cultural and furthers better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world. When Len and his wife Anabelle traveled to India to assist Rotary International's effort to stamp out polio, Len brought back his experience to our resident population, showing slides, giving lectures, and bringing the world of India and Rotary into our midst. As the World Trade Center was devastated, Len brought the residents through an informational, yet healing process, through his current events sessions. Through the blend of Len's volunteerism, the resident's lives have been enriched. Len Dalberg was informed in February that he had won the award and was honored subsequently at CAHSA's Annual Convention held May 2-4th in San Jose, CA. As CAHSA's statewide Volunteer of the Year, he stood before the assembly and in turn, honored all the people who have enriched his life over the years. His lovely wife, Anabelle Dalberg, and Vicki Morehouse and Suzanne Hollrah of the Solvang Lutheran Home were in attendance as well as over 500 CAHSA members. Thank you, Len, for your outstanding contribution to the Solvang Lutheran Home, the community of Santa Ynez Valley, our Rotary Club, and the World-at-Large. You are deeply appreciated. The Solvang Lutheran Home is honoring Len w/ a party on Wednesday, May 25th at 2:30 PM in their main dining room. Everyone is invited to the occasion.
