Lord Nelson Says

Our Fifth Wednesday at Pat & Monty Roberts' "Flag Is Up" Ranch was a big success. There were over a hundred people there and we had a great program and a good lunch - Thanks John!

For those who haven't heard, there has bee a change of date for our Centennial Project due to all of the rain. The new date will be May 31 thru June 5. The Volunteer Committee will be contacting those who have signed up concerning the new date. We still need many volunteers and will be looking for more sign-ups. We are still selling pavers, but we are on course to raise the required money. And finally, I was told this week that our Tool Committee had commitments for all the tools that we will need.

New Member

Our club has received two more applications for membership from Carl Butler and John Walker. Both of them have been to the last several meetings. Carl is being proposed by John Patterson and his classification will be Fireman. And John is being proposed by Rudi Van Enoo and his classification will be Retailer. Any comments or concerns about our new candidates should be addressed to Sharon Pike.

News Flash

Rotarian John Rasmussen has volunteered his most trusted employee to help us build Rotary's Centennial Project, the Children's Playground at Sunny Fields Park. Thank you John!

He also reports that he, Ken Andersen of Nielsen Building Materials, and Rotarian Gary Riches of the Solvang Club, are the ones who have arranged for all tools needed for the project. They inspire all Rotarians to follow their example.

People News

Dr. Frank Pedersen, charter member of our club, fell recently and was hospitalized. Please remember him in your prayers.

Construction Postponed

Because of all of the rain, the Build-Out dates for our Centennial Project has been re-scheduled for Tuesday, May 31 to Sunday, June 5. City of Solvang engineers felt that they could not complete the grading of the project site by the original dates of April 26 to May 1.

Zander's Leave To Serve

Rick and Esther Zander will be leaving soon for another term of service to the people of Negros Island in the Philippines. Surely they are living examples of the motto of Rotary, "Service Above Self."

Len Dalberg interviewed Rick recently and he related that the Irrigation Project has been completed. However, there are other projects in progress:

1. He is involved with a project to build 293 homes for squatter families. The Montecito and Simi Sunrise Rotary Clubs are involved, plus a "Couples For Christ" club. Twenty thousand dollars ($20,000) has been raised from clubs and individuals for this project.
2. Rick is bringing many computers and typewriters to be given to a junior college on Negros Island and several elementary schools which are "out in the sticks."
3. Beds and walkers have been gathered for a Home for the Elderly.
4. Two high schools in the mountains will receive 16 sewing machines. A ship container will be filled with these gifts.
5. Rick and Esther have leased a small farm of 3 acres and are growing rice, corn, carrots, vegetables, Napier grass, etc. Farmers will be taught better farming practices on this demo farm.

Rick & Esther will be with us on April 6 and will share their vision for these projects. They will return to the U.S. in less than a year.
