Lord Nelson Says

February 23 was a very big day for Rotary and Len Dalberg put on an outstanding program for us - Thanks Len! The 23rd was also the starting point for the public to be involved with our Centennial Project. The Program put on at the Vet Hall was very good and I would like to thank Jeff Cotter for being the "Master of Ceremonies." But, there is a lot of work left to do and we need everybody to sign up for the construction of Sunny Fields Playground and to consider buying pavers.

I would also like to remind you that it isn't too late yet to sign up for the 2005 Rotary International Convention in Chicago, June 18-22. This should be the greatest convention for Rotary ever. However, your time is running out and if your registration isn't done by March 31, you will not be listed in the official directory. Some of the events planned are the Rotary Centennial Parade, "The Race to the Finish" Run/Walk Polio Fundraiser, The Field Museum evenings, and the Chicago White Sox baseball game. See me to get more information and a registration packet.

Sunny Fields Playground Volunteer Sign-Up

There is still time to sign-up to help with the building of the children's playground, which is our Centennial Project. Sign-up sheets have been passed around at our club meetings the last several weeks. The build-out dates are from Tuesday, April 26 to Sunday, May 1. The shifts available to work are 8am-12pm, 12:30pm-4:30pm, and 5:00pm-close. We are looking for "Skilled" workers who are familiar with tools, measuring, and cutting; "Unskilled" workers who can carry, assemble, shovel, etc.; people to help serve food; people to help with childcare; and any other special skills that you may feel are needed. We are also looking for any tools and/or equipment that you are willing to donate or lend the clubs to help with the building. For additional information, you may contact Tami Jo Dotson at (805) 686-2020 or David Brown at (805) 686-2321.

5th Wednesday Program

On Wednesday, March 30, we will be having our 5th Wednesday Program at the Monty Roberts "Flag is Up" Ranch on Highway 246. We will be having an outdoor BBQ lunch and demonstration of "joinup" in the round arena. Make you sure you mark your calendars and bring a guest!

Celebrating 100 Years of
Rotary Around the World

Today, there are more than 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 165 countries worldwide. To show showcase Rotary's global impact, a regional magazine editor from each continent (except Antarctica, where Rotary has a club but no magazine) reported on local projects from their part of the world.

In Australia, Rotarians funded an oncology research laboratory and offer scholarships to indigenous people aspiring to work in medical careers.
In Brazil, Rotarians help former street children forge new lives at Hope Mountain. In Russia, Rotarians provided dental care to underprivileged youths. In Canada, where the government matches half of the funding for World Community Service projects, Rotary clubs have financed more than 400 international projects in the past 10 years. In India, Rotarians support health camps in remote villages and are winning their fight against polio. In South Africa, projects have included treating tuberculosis patients, reducing illiteracy, and helping offer English and Zulu language classes for law enforcement officers.
