Lord Nelson Says

We have gone four months so far this fiscal year and we are still down in our membership, so our Membership Committee has a new proposal. We are going to issue a free lunch pass to each of our members. This pass is to be used to invite a guest to our meeting that has some interest in our club and hopefully will increase our possible new members.

We are also still working on getting higher attendance percentages. You can make up at any other Club meetings and Committee meetings which include Board meetings, Foundation meetings, Centennial meetings, and District meetings. And it is also a make up if you travel to Mexico for Rotary or go to the Poverty Conference.

I also would like to invite each of you to attend Rotary's One-Hundred Year Anniversary Party being held in Chicago next June. So far six of our members have signed up. It should be a lot of fun and for those of you who haven't been to an International Convention, I want you to know that it isn't just all meetings and there should be plenty of time to see Chicago. Also, our District Governor, Jan Lindsay, has arranged a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan. The first cutoff for signing up before prices go up for registration is December 31, but the most important thing is to get your hotel registration as soon as possible.

Rotary Global History Quiz

The answers to the last four questions of the Rotary Global History Quiz were:

9.   Sylvester Schiele(4)                 11. Past RI President…(4)
10. "Fred" Sheldon's…(3)             12. Rotaryanns (3)

For those of you who kept track of how many questions you got right…consider yourself a "Paul Harris Historian" if you got all 12 questions right. If you got 8-11 questions right, you are a highly knowledgeable Rotarian. If you got 4-7 questions right, you know a lot about Rotary and its history. If you got 1-3 questions right, you have begun to show great interest in Rotary.

New Member

Our club has received an application for membership from Marilyn Johnson. Marilyn is being proposed by Len Dalberg and Sharon Pike and is being classified as Retired Teacher. Any comments or concerns about our new candidate should be addressed to Sharon Pike.

December 15th - Christmas Party

Don't forget to mark your calendars and sign up for our Club's Christmas Party that will be held at the Alisal Ranch. A signup sheet will be passed around at the next couple of meetings if you would like to attend.

Our Rotary Family

The Board has approved a six-month leave of absence to both Joe Dugan and Michele Hinnrichs because of their current business conflicts with our weekly meetings.

History of Sunny Fields Park

Tom and Carolynn Petersen were guests of our club last week and they shared some of the history of the Petersen Ranch, which included the triangle on Alamo Pintado Road, now known as Sunny Fields Park. Our Rotary Centennial Project is to install a children's playground at the park site.

Tom's grandparents, Theodor and Marie Petersen, came to Solvang in 1912, where they purchased property on Alamo Pintado and started a dairy. Their son Tom and his wife Johanna continued to operate the dairy after the death of Tom's parents. Our guest, a grandson of Theodor and Marie, shared experiences from the days when the farm was a dairy. He also gave us insights into the crops that were harvested.

In 1986, Alamo Pintado Road was straightened, resulting in the separation of the triangle from the rest of the property. "Sure ruined a good farm", complained Tom Petersen, Sr. Because the triangle was separated from the farm, it became the property of Santa Barbara County. The County recently deeded the land to the city of Solvang with the stipulation that it be used for a park.
