I would like to encourage all of our members to attend our meeting this week. It is a chance to get to know our District Governor, Jan Lindsay, and to find out what his ideas are for this Rotary Year. I also want you to think about getting a Rotary license plate, as this is one of Jan's projects. I want to thank Elle Seymour for sponsoring our newest member, Michele Fairbank. Welcome Michele! There are many people who would like to be Rotarians, just invite them to our meetings. Join fellow Rotarians on a cruise to Ensenada, Mexico this fall. The conference will kick off at the Sheraton in San Pedro on Friday, October 22, 2004 and then move on board the ship for a fun-filled cruise to Ensenada. There will be a joint humanitarian project with our sister district in Mexico, #4100. The ship, Royal Caribbean Monarch of the Seas, will return to San Pedro on October 25, 2004. Call Kathy Hill at (805) 987-5087 for further details. Beverly Chu, wife of John Chu our program chairman, is ill because of cancer. Send her a "Get Well" card if you get a chance. In addition, drop a little note to Tom Barnard who also has cancer. This past Wednesday, Michele Fairbank formerly became the newest member to our club. In case anyone has not gotten a chance to meet Michele, below is a little snapshot of our newest member. Michele was born in 1974 in Encino, CA and moved around between Los Angeles and Lake Tahoe, before her parents settled in Grass Valley where she grew up. At age 20, she got brave and moved out to the big city of Sacramento where she attended Sacramento State University for a few years. Her next venture then landed her in the state of Colorado where she eventually graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor's Degree in Hotel Management. After graduation, she began a 10-year career in the hotel field, starting off as a banquet server and working on up to a sales manager. While working in Colorado, her best friend since 6th grade who was living in San Diego, called out of the blue and told her that she had met her future husband and that she had given her number to him. To make a long story short, six months later Michele found herself in San Diego and in love. And in February 2002, Michele and Eric were married. Michele's husband, Eric, had always wanted to become a firefighter and has realized his dream when he landed his first job in the fire industry as a Hot Shot Firefighter for Vandenberg AFB in 2000. He now works for the Santa Barbara City Fire Department. Michele followed Eric up and initially found work as a sales manager at Bacara. After two years, she made a career change and now works for Fidelity National Title, who had just opened up a new office in the valley. Michele and Eric have not looked back and continue to love the area more every day. Today, their family is growing with their 15lb tabby cat "Tigger" and their new black lab "Diesel", but Michele is sure that there will be some lil' firefighters in their future. "We grew in numbers, in fellowship, in the spirit of helpfulness to each other and to our city. The banker and the baker, the parson and the plumber, the lawyer and the laundryman discovered the similarity of each other's ambitions, problems, successes, and failures. We learned how much we had in common. We found joy in being of service to one another." Paul P.
