KING RICHARD SAYS those of you who missed the meeting on the 28th missed a great one. Len Dalberg put on a splendid history of our club and we were given a new chartering Certificate to replace the original which was burned in a fire years ago. He had invited several past presidents who are no longer members of our club and had some Honorary members (widows) as well. We also heard from seven RYLA young people who were really charming - we do have some great teenagers after all. Butch Philips is gathering items for the garage sale at his house next week end. The money raised will help our Exchange student, Marie, to go on the Rotary sponsored train trip across the country. Let's all pitch in. Several of us will attend the District Assembly on Saturday, the 1st of May. We always get a lot out of these meetings and hopefully more of you can go next year. Please let Elle Seymour know of any member or past member that needs help or compassion. We have a lot of both. The 3 Rotary Clubs in the valley have adopted as their Centennial project, the purchase and installation of a Children's Playground in Sunny Fields Park. The clubs have contracted with Leathers Associates of Ithaca, N.Y. to design and supervise the playground's construction. The design dates are past. Many children from our valley schools participated. The Publicity Committee guided by Nelson Schneider of the Solvang Club and Sylvia Remmenga of the Los Olivos Club is busy. Did you see the great write-up in the Santa Barbara News Press Valley Section? Our Fund Raising Committee led by our past president, Jeff Cotter, and Herb Bundgen, past president of the Solvang Club, is alive and active. Construction dates are now firm: April 27 to May 1, 2005. Leathers Associates designs some outstanding playgrounds. Visit Kid's World in Alameda Park in Santa Barbara to see one of their designs. Carolyn Johnson, wife of past-president Harry Johnson, died last month. Rotary extends its sympathies. IR's Board of Directors has confirmed that the march from Ludwig van Beethoven's Overture to "Egmont" is the Rotary anthem. Plans are underway to hire an orchestra to record an original version and make it available for sale to Rotarians. Don't forget to sign up for the Annual SYV Rotary's Nelson Owens Classic Rotary Golf Tournament. This Annual Golf Tournament is taking place on Thursday, May 6, 2004 at the River Course in Solvang. The entry fee (which includes golf, golf cart, and buffet after the golfing) is only $110, with the net proceeds going to the SYV Rotary Scholarship Fund to benefit SYV High School students. It is a four-person scramble with several prizes including $25,000 and a trip to Hawaii. Only 100 players can play, so return your entry form as soon as possible. If you cannot golf, but would like to still help with this great event, Nelson is still in dire need for some volunteers to "hole watch" the Par 3 holes. For more information or if you would like to volunteer, please contact either Joe Dugan (688-3374) or Nelson Owens (688-6317). We are always looking for articles about our members and all the Rotary activity that occurs in the Valley. Please contact Len Dalberg or myself.
