What a wonderful idea Jeff Little had to create our upcoming small group get-togethers ! Six of our members will host Rotarians and their significant others drawn from a hat (not the sig. others), for a meal at their homes. If you haven't been notified where you are to go, please contact Patty Murphy. She and Jeff Cotter and Jeff Little put this all together. I hope everyone will opt in ! It is a great opportunity to meet socially with people you may not know very well. Hope we have lots of these. Next week is a BIG one. First our 45th anniversary celebration ! We plan to have a cake and champagne, so don't miss it. Also on Wednesday, John Dean from Leathers and Associates will brief us on the outcome of Design day for our Rotary Centennial Kids Playground project. Tuesday, starting at a presentation at the Breakfast Club, will be the Design day involving about 50 kids from all our schools at the School Pavilion. A program for all day was handed out, if you missed it, I'll send you one. We'd like a good turnout. Len Dalberg is doing one fine job on this major Centennial project. The Santa Ynez Valley Rotary Club, aka the friendliest club west of the Mississippi, celebrates it's 45th birthday on march 10, 2004. The club was charted on March 10, 1959. The charter was presented to our club on April 28, 1959. The first president was Robert "Pea Soup" Anderson, 1959-60. The second president was Willerd B. Bellack, 1960-61. Mr. Bellack was past governor of a Rotary District in Wisconsin who worked hard to organize a club in our valley. Our own Dr. Frank Pedersen was president in 1965-66 and is the only charter member still active in the club. As Knight of the Archives he can give you the inside scoop on the club's storied history. The triangle on Alamo Pintado Rd. now has an official name, Sunny Fields Park. The name Solvang when translated from the Danish is "sunny Fields". Note the sign as you drive by. The Rotary logo is prominently displayed calling attention to our Centennial Project - the purchase and installation of a children's playground (of course all of the SYV Rotary will be welcome to play there). As the King mentioned, John Dean, a representative of Leathers Associates of Ithaca NY will be in Solvang, March 9 & 10. Leathers Associates was responsible for guiding Santa Barbara citizens as they built, "Kids World" in Alameda Park across the street from Alice Keck Park. There was a great picture and article in this weeks paper of our Rotary leaders and the plans for the park. By the time Joe gets through with fines for the picture the project will be paid for. Mr. Dean's schedule is as follows: Tuesday 9 March 7:15 AM - He speaks at Solvang Rotary. 9:00 AM - He meets with children from 6 Valley Schools where he will ask them to help him design a playground. 10:45 AM - Children will watch him design a playground. 12:30-4:30 PM - Mr. Dean completes design 4:30 PM - John Dean meets with committee-Rotarians and community leaders. Subject - "planning the year ahead. 6:30 PM - Public meeting at Solvang School. Rotarians are encouraged to attend. Wednesday March 10 12:10 PM - Very appropriately, John Dean will speak to all of us at our 45th Anniversary meeting about our Rotary Centennial Project. Do not forget Happy Hour at the Meadows Bar on the third Thursday of every month. February's Happy Hour was a great success and the Knightest of Merriment and Frolic, Patty Murphy and her helper Wanda Mcpherson deserve a round of applause. As King Richard mentioned, if you missed last weeks meeting and have not been contacted about the fifth Wednesday get together be sure and call Patty Murphy. This event promises to be a great way to socialize with your fellow Rotarians. Wednesday Mar. 10, 2004 @ 12:10PM John Dean from Leathers & Associates will discuss the design of the Rotary Centennial Park. Wednesday Mar. 17, 2004 @ 12:10PM Richard Shawcroft has a short video about the upcoming architectural design contest, followed by a new members "Craft Talk". Wednesday Mar. 24, 2004 @ 12:10PM Lt Leland Bently of the Sheriff's Dept and Senior Deputy/Buellton Community Resource Officer Eddie Pond will present a program on the "Sheriff Athletic League/Police Athletic League" in the S.Y.V. |
