King Richard Says

Last night I attended our Foundation Board Meeting (any member can attend) We voted to give $100.00 per member to the Rotary International Foundation. This was proposed at the Club Board Retreat in Cambria. The $7,000.00 will help qualify us for the Governors Award for this year. Our Board felt that it is an obligation to support the International Foundation and your President didn't like the idea of dunning the membership for it. After all, you did earn and contribute this money and, as I have told you before, our clubs Annual giving has been below the average of the clubs in the district.

Don't forget the "Sustaining Memberships" for $100.00 or $200. Now that you will not be pressured to contribute, you might want to participate in this opportunity. I have the forms and the pins.

We were pleased that all the pictures and flags provided by the Lance Armstrong riding team were taken by our members. Jeff Little and Greg Pensa are working on getting him to a meeting in person next year.

Valentine Party

Bring your Valentine to our regular meeting on February 11 for the best Rotary Valentine Party West of the Mississippi. Buy your Valentine a flower arrangement for $10.00. Monies will go to our Scholarship Fund.

Suzanne and Jeff are planning a love song spectacular! It will include some wonderful surprises. So, come with your Valentine and enjoy a genuine Rotary produced celebration of love.

Two types of scholarships are offered. One is based on the student's volunteer work and academic achievement and the other is awarded to students who have shown a tremendous improvement in academic performance during high school. The applicants complete an application form and write an essay about themselves and finalists are interviewed by SYV Rotarians. Children of Rotarians are eligible for these scholarships. This year there are six, one thousand dollar, scholarships available for college bound seniors.

The 4 Way Test Essay exposes high school students to Rotary's 4 Way Test. The students write an essay pertaining to the Rotary 4 Way Test. The winners are awarded the following amounts: 1st place $100; 2nd place $75; 3rd place $50.

Bright Future helps elementary kids from financially challenged families' pay for things that help them "blend in" (back packs, gym clothes, school supplies) and "participate in" school activities that cost money (sports, music…). The philosophy behind this program is that when kids "fit in" - and look like the other kids & participate in all activities - they stay in school.

Our Rotary Club donates $1584 towards the summer open gym at Solvang Elementary School. This amount pays for the gym three nights per week for 11 weeks. This program has been very well attended.

The two day Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp addresses: personal development: character & ethics, mediation/problem solving, leadership, public speaking & diversity. Our club will cover the cost for 3 high school juniors to attend the Camp.

In an effort to have a safe and sober high school graduation at SYVUHS, the high school parents create an elaborate party for the graduating students. Our club is contributing $1,000 to the high school's Grad Night party.

SYV Rotary Happy Hour

The Knightess of Merriment and Frivolity (Patty Murphy) and Wanda McPherson have decided that we need a Happy Hour once a month to assist in group bonding or whatever excuse sounds good. These occasions are planned for the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Meadows Bar. The first one will transpire on February 19th 5:00-7:00PM. Patty says the first $100 of libation is on her for the kick-off event (I think). Don't miss this opportunity to share in the fun.
