King Richard Says

I trust you all had a great holiday season.  New years day was a special treat for us USC fans.  Deepa tells me we now have 75 members - great news and keep up the good work.  All of you, I know, are acquainted with someone you could bring as your guest.  We need a ten percent increase to meet the District goal.  John Rasmussen has taken over the Membership - Retention job and I know will continue this increase in new rookies.

The Board is going to Cambria for a Retreat later this month and we will discuss in greater detail some of the areas in which we think we can improve.  If any of you have areas you would like us to look into, please let me know and I will put it on the agenda.

We need to work on our giving to International and soon I will have an opportunity for you to become sustaining members for a minimum of only $100.00 !  Save up your pennies and help us reach our goal.

New Members Mary Elliott & David Lourie

Mary Elliott is the executive director of the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society and Carriage House Museum in Santa Ynez. Born in Iowa, Mary moved to Santa Barbara to pursue her education receiving her BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara. In addition to her current role with the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society, she previously directed the Marketing and Public Relations departments for the Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus, OH. Mary has also served as Communications Manager for the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens and began her career at Davies Communications, a Santa Barbara public relations firm.

David Lourie is currently the Head of Midland School, a coeducational college preparatory boarding school in Los Olivos. He was born and raised in Natick, Massachusetts. After graduating from Yale in 1993, he began his career in independent schools as a middle school Latin and history teacher and coach at Tampa Preparatory School in Tampa, Florida. In 1998, David left Tampa Prep to become the first Head at Terrace Community School, a public charter school in Tampa. For two years, he collaborated with teachers and parents to build a program for 160 students in grades 5-8. With the charter school successfully started and a child on the way, David sought a return to independent schools and thus joined the faculty of Midland school as Admissions Director in 2000 and was named Head in January 2002. He lives at Midland with his wife, Sarah; his three-year old son, Jacob; and his one-year old daughter, Rebecca.

Let’s all join in welcoming them to Rotary and make a special effort to meet each of them. (Particularly those of you who need help in your projects. They are raring to go.)

From the Cogwheel Staff

Your staff is busily investigating the rumor that USC has won some sort of competition. We have checked with all the academic award groups, but no luck yet. Our new member David Lourie says they did not beat Yale last year in football, as did our Cal graduates. Maybe King Richard can help us out, except he is so modest when it comes to USC.

Articles for the Cogwheel
