King Richard Says

What a thrill it was to welcome wives of past Rotarians from our club into Honorary membership.  Betty Madsen has names of eleven spouses and seven attended the meeting. Several asked me to repeat that they were welcome to attend any meeting of Rotary because they are now Honorary members.  They were truly thrilled to receive their certificate and a pin.  We will put them on our mail list and make sure they receive the Cogwheel.  It is hard to believe that for all these years, after their Rotarian husbands died, we ignored them.  Family of Rotary is really a great thing and the committee is doing a fine job taking care of them, finally.

My year is almost half over already and it has been wonderful for me.  Many of you have told me how you enjoy the meetings and my committee and I will try to keep it up.  We have completed many of our projects and our membership is growing.  I hope to see you all at the Christmas Party and that you all have a fantastic Christmas and New Year!

Holiday Schedule

We will not meet on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, December 24th and 31st. Since the meetings are cancelled makeup is not a requirement, but as always you are encouraged to enjoy the fellowship at other clubs in the area. Be sure and check their Holiday schedule first.

Centennial Project

Rotary International celebrates its Centennial on Feb. 23, 2005. In recognition of this event the three clubs in our valley have decided to fund and build a Centennial Project – the children’s playground in what is now called the Triangle on Alamo Pintado Road.

Leathers Associates of Ithica N.Y., designers of Kid’s World in Alice Keck Park in Santa Barbara have been engaged to lead us in this project. Important dates:
1.   Centennial programs presentation at our Wed. January 21, 2004 meeting.
2.   Design Day. March 9, 2004 to be held at a local school.
3.   SYV Rotary 45th birthday – March 10, 2004.
4.   Building the playground, Spring 2005.
Your board is hard at work developing fund raising schemes. Keep tuned.

Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation started as the dream of one man, 1916-17 RI President Arch C. Klumph, who envisioned an endowment fund “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” The rotary club of Kansas City, Mo. made the first contribution in the modest amount of $26.50. Since 1928, when it was formally established, The Rotary Foundation has provided more than $1.4 billion in grants for projects in 166 countries.

The Foundation has six goals for 2003-2004.
1.   Fulfill our promise: eradicate polio.
2.   Lend a Hand to support 2003-04 RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe.
3.   Educate Rotarians about The Rotary Foundation.
4.   Encourage Rotarians to expand their help to children.
5.   Increase effective use of Foundation alumni.
6.   Every Rotarian, Every Year: Increase contributions to the Annual Programs Fund.

Busy Season for SYV Rotarians

Many of your fellow Rotarians have been busy this season ringing the bells for the Salvation Army in downtown Solvang and Buellton. Santa’s sleigh was also a big hit in the local communities as Santa was again driven around the valley neighborhoods by his “elves” from your club. Thanks to all of you who “Lent a Hand”.

From the Cogwheel Staff

Rookies are reminded that one of their duties is to provide a short biography to the Cogwheel as a further introduction to the club.

All of us on the Cogwheel staff, our Pulitzer Award winning writers, copy clerks, printers and the folks in the mail room, want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
