Our visit from District Governor Arnie Dowdy was informative and inspiring. With summer vacations in full swing, we were not very well attended but I think in the meeting with club officers the Governor was pleased. We have a full agenda of goals this year and all the chairs are working diligently to accomplish what we have set out to do. I am grateful to our hard working chairpersons. The new Bike Ride program is progressing nicely with Jeff Little doing an outstanding job. He will need a lot of hands on help in May and I'm sure we can count on all of you. Our Foundation approved $15,000 seed money for the project. Congratulations to Deepa Willingham, who received her second Paul Harris Award on Wednesday. No one works harder than she to promote the activities of our club. A get well card has been sent to Leon Roeser who had surgery at Cottage in Santa Barbara. At this writing I am told he is doing well and is out of intensive care. Get well soon, Leon. Our song leader Suzanne Hollrah was a delegate to the bi-annual convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America in Milwaukee, WI. Len Dalberg and the lovely Anabelle spent two and one half weeks traveling down Memory Lane in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ontario Canada. Included stops were two family reunions and the Centennial celebration of Len’s home town. Kristen Thomsen, Recreation Director for the City of Solvang, reports that all systems are “Go” for the new Triangle Park on Alamo Pintado Rd. Thus we can move ahead with the Rotary Centennial project, the purchase and installation of a children’s playground in the new park. Ms. Thomsen reported that the monies to pay for the Environmental Impact Report and the Annexation fee have been received. Money for the beginning of grading and the installation of utilities will be available in 2004. The book, A Century of Service, The Story of Rotary International, will be released in early 2004. The 384 page volume features a wealth of Rotary facts, figures, and trivia. Those who preorder the book by March 31, 2004 will receive a free CD. Go to the Rotary International website for details, http://www.rotary.org/centennial/spotlight/2003/jul03.html Doctor’s at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore have successfully completed an operation on Karam Mohammed Jabbar Alubadie, a ten month old Iraqi child suffering from potentially fatal heart problems. The cost was covered by Rotary’s Gift of Life program. Close to 350 Rotarians from Nordic countries and other parts of the world met on 13 August in Stockholm, Sweden, to discuss Rotary's peace initiatives at the RI Presidential Celebration on Peace and Tolerance. The fifth of 15 mini-conferences focused on just one aspect of Rotary: reinvigorating Rotarian commitment to international understanding, goodwill, and peace. RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe reminded participants in a keynote address that international understanding has been a goal of Rotarians since the earliest days of "our organization. Everything we do — improving our communities, promoting international fellowship, carrying out humanitarian service — supports a world of peace and tolerance." He encouraged them to always consider the connection between humanitarian service and peace. "Hunger, poverty, and ignorance breed despair, anger, and fear - the very same emotions that fan the flames of intolerance, conflict, and even war," the RI president said. "And those who suffer the miseries of abject poverty, cut off from hope for a decent future - these are the people who are most vulnerable to the rhetoric of war." Wednesday 27 Aug., 2003 @ 12:10 Dr. Ann Foxworthy, president of Allan Hancock College will bring us up to date on the college. Wednesday, Sept 3, 2003 @ 12:10 TBA Wednesday Sept 10, 2003 @ 12:10PM Jackie Cacan tells us about the Cal Poly Architectural seminar, for which SYV Rotary sponsored her. David Goldstein will also be our guest. |
