July 23, John Rasmussen received a second Paul Harris Fellow recognition award. John has been a member of our club since 1990 with a classification of general contractor. He was honored for serving as Chairman of the Community Service Committee and Club Service Committees. John was program Chairman for a year. Whenever any carpenter's tool was needed Rotarian John not only provided it, he handled it himself with great skill. He surely illustrates our 2003-04 motto "Lend A Hand". This column will be written by Len Dalberg. Items about members should be sent to Len at ledahd@syv.com. John Traller has resigned for personal reasons. He and Kathy plan to travel for some time. John was president of our club in 1998-99. Jim Groessl has transferred to the Solvang Rotary. The breakfast hour better meets his schedule. Jack and Kaki Austen and George and Sally Jones have returned from a RV travel experience. With a group of RVers they retraced the journey of Lewis & Clark, albeit with air conditioning and satellite TV. It's good to see Betty Madsen again after her leave of absence. Dr. Frank Pedersen's seaside home wasn't damaged in a recent mudslide but his neighbors were not so fortunate. Dr. Scott Saunder's has opened a new practice in Lompoc. His new schedule prevents him from attending club meetings. Bertha Foxen, new manger of Mid State Bank in Solvang has been proposed for membership. She is sponsored by Rich Saferite and Len Dalberg. Her classification is banker. Andrew Zane West, a local chiropractor, is recommended by Butch Phillips. His classification is chiropractor. Any comments about these two proposed members should be addressed to the Club Secretary. It was a great pleasure to participate in the presentation of the Paul Harris Award to John Rasmussen. There isn't a single club member more deserving. John is always there to help with any project and the first to raise his hand to volunteer. We have two major projects new for this year and I was lucky enough to get outstanding people to chair each. Betty Madsen has volunteered to chair the "Family of Rotary" project which President Jonathan is promoting for 2003-2004. She will be telling all about it in August. Len Dalberg has agreed to continue chairing our committee for the Centennial Project which, I understand, is progressing nicely. The city rec department is spearheading the legal issues to get the Triangle on Alamo Pintado approved for a park. He also will address the membership in August. Your enthusiastic response to these and other ongoing programs is heartwarming to say the least.
